Stephen Fried is an award-winning journalist, author, and professor, noted for his work on mental health and medical science. He is the co-author with Patrick Kennedy of the 2015 New York Times bestseller A Common Struggle: A Personal Journey through the Past and Future of Mental Illness and Addiction, and author of five other nonfiction books including The New Rabbi.
His recent two-part cover story in The Forward deals with the historical stigma surrounding mental illness in Jewish communities. Fried will discuss this lingering prejudice, as well as what Jewish communities can do to incorporate mental health awareness into our systems of support and spiritual practice. He’ll speak during our Shabbat service and at the Oneg Shabbat afterwards.
